Who We Are

Transforming the lives of children with visual impairments, physical disabilities, and severe intellectual disabilities since 2007.

Jicama 89 is a registered South African non-profit organisation dedicated to transforming the lives of children with visual impairments, physical disabilities, and severe intellectual disabilities. Since 2007, we have worked relentlessly to support underprivileged children in need of specialised education and care, ensuring they receive the same opportunities as able-bodied children.

We support 501 learners across three specialist schools in Johannesburg: Sibonile School for the Blind, Harvey Cohen Centre, and Isizwe Setjhaba SID School – providing educational support, assistive technology, food security, therapy assistance, and accommodation support.

As a Section 18A approved organisation and Level 1 B-BBEE contributor, donations to Jicama 89 qualify for tax benefits and Socio-Economic Development recognition – making your contribution count twice. We don’t just donate – we create lasting impact, providing sustainable solutions that empower children, build independence, and unlock their potential.

Our Approach

Sustainable Support Across Three Specialist Schools

We work directly with Sibonile School for the Blind, Harvey Cohen Centre, and Isizwe Setjhaba SID School to identify each school’s most urgent needs, then source the funding, equipment, and support to meet them.

From assistive technology and therapy equipment to food security and infrastructure upgrades, every project starts with a need identified by the schools themselves – and every donation goes directly toward meeting it.

Since 2007, that approach has delivered everything from BrailleNote Touch devices and a 200 KVA backup generator to a new 72-bed girls’ hostel – always in direct response to what the schools tell us they need most.
